João Vaz Serra de Moura (1937-2016) - in memoriam
31 October 2016Stuart Miller
It is with great sadness that we recently learned of the death of our friend and colleague, João Vaz Serra de Moura on Sunday 16 October 2016. João died after a lengthy period of illness.
João founded the law firm VSA Vaz Serra e Associados in Lisbon and was an active member in its work until he became ill. Born in Estarreja in 1937, he studied law at the University of Lisbon, graduating from there in 1959. He became a Portuguese attorney (Advogado) in 1961. Having co-founded his own firm, VSA became one of the earliest members of WLN and, with João's support, proudly hosted one of our most fondly remembered conferences in late 2008.
Along the way, João served as Director of the Automobile Club of Portugal from 1975-81; as Minister of Life Quality and Sports in the formative Portuguese government from 1981-83; and as a member of the General Council of the Portuguese Bar Assocation from 1984-86.
On behalf of all the directors and members of WLN, we extend our sympathy for such loss to João's wife and sons, and to his brother José Vaz Serra de Moura (who is also a partner in VSA) , their wider family and all our friends at at VSA. At this most difficult time for you all, we hope that you will be comforted by your memories of João as a gentle, kind and warm person, and as an excellent, clever, witty and highly respected lawyer both locally and further afield. He will be missed by so many people.
